11 Tips For Effectively Decluttering Your Closet

Open wardrobe inside. Men an women clothes.

You may have heard the adage that you should throw out half of your wardrobe every year because most clothes are worn only a few times before they’re relegated to the back of the closet and forgotten about. While it’s not always easy to part with your clothing, throwing away items that you don’t wear can be very freeing.

Built in wardrobes Sydney owner Piero Silva explains that decluttering your closet will leave room for new clothes in your life and cut down on the mess throughout your home. Plus, knowing what you have is key to avoiding duplicate purchases or impulse buys during shopping sprees.

The following list will give you the motivation to clear out your wardrobe no matter what mood you are in.

Get rid of anything that doesn’t fit properly anymore.

This is not just about clothing but also includes larger kitchen appliances or tools. Do you know those things lying around the house that take up so much room and only get used once in a blue moon? They need to go. If you haven’t touched it in over a year, it’s time to let go! Once you’ve decided to part ways with an item take into consideration where you will donate, recycle or sell it.

“‘One in, one out”

If you are adding an item to your collection make sure another one leaves with it. For example, if you purchase a new pair of shoes, throw out the old ones or hand them down to someone else who can use them. This helps keep clutter at bay and makes room for future items when needed.

Keep 30% of your closet clear

This allows air to circulate through your hanging garments which helps prevent moths from destroying your clothing – oh the horror! Your shoes should also be kept in your closet with nothing on top of them. This helps prevent dust from accumulating or ruining the materials.

Use what you already have!

You don’t have to go out and buy a fancy folding system for all your t-shirts, tank tops, jeans etc. Fold any fitted t-shirts so that they are folded in half lengthwise and then again widthwise before placing them in a drawer or stacking them up neatly.

Only keep items that make you feel good when you wear them.

They don’t have to be expensive but they do need to fit your current style and needs. For example: If you’re someone who doesn’t like wearing shorts, hold off buying more until you find a style you are comfortable with. Having too many fashion items can cause distress when you don’t have enough space in your closet or drawers.

Keep an eye out for fashion trends to stay ahead of the curve!

If something new and fresh is coming down the runway, look around your home and see if there’s anything already taking up some real estate in your wardrobe collection. If not, go get it! Just make sure it fits and looks good on you before adding it to your collection.

Donate the clothes you no longer wear.

When donating clothes, make sure they are clean and do not have any visible tears or holes in them. Unsightly stains also need to be removed before packing old clothes because these donations go on to be sold in thrift stores.

Divide your wardrobe into sections.

If you’re working on organizing your closet, try splitting into groups like casual wear, dressy clothes, workout clothes and nighttime wear. Dividing these categories can make it easier for you to see what’s inside of each section.

Try putting some items at the back of your closet or under your bed.

This could be anything from old magazines, shoes, video games etc. Getting rid of these things might seem difficult but having them hidden away will help remind you that they’re there if necessary.

Take a picture!

Taking photos of favourite clothing items is a great way to keep track of them! This way if you see a dress in a store window and think ‘I have one just like it at home’ you can look up the photo on your phone and know whether or not to go in for a closer look.

Stock up on hangers!

Make sure you have plenty of hangers so that there’s no chance of seeing a wireframe ever again! They’re available in all shapes, sizes and materials including wood, plastic, velvet etc… Wooden hangers are strong enough to keep the heaviest items in place without damaging them. Velvet ones are great for keeping silk ties in check while still being gentle on their fabric.
