7 White Wines Proudly Made In Australia

The wine history of Australia stretches as far back as the 1820s. With over 60,000 vineyards producing 5 billion litres of wine each year, it is no wonder the country has become known for its white wines. The Australian climate varies greatly between regions, but all areas have clean air free of industrial pollution which allows sunlight to penetrate through to ripen fruit during flowering (veraison), reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers or herbicides to produce high-quality grapes at lower yields. These bottles of wine make perfect choices for an everyday drink or a special occasion.

 

According to alcohol delivery Sydney owner Ming Lin, there are over 400 different grape varieties with differing sugar, acidity and tannin levels used to make wine across Australia, and each variety affects the taste of the final product. The combination of climate, soil and grape variety means that the Australian wine industry can produce a huge range of excellent wines.

Riesling

There is nothing like a crisp and fruity Riesling, and the Australian variant does not disappoint. A great choice for those who love white but want something special, Riesling is a white grape with thin skin and a thin juice, which gives it a special aroma. It has been made in the Alsace region of France for centuries and Australia has carried on that tradition faithfully by picking grapes from specific varieties at their peak ripeness. This ensures that the finished product will be as perfect as possible.

 

Chardonnay

Perhaps one of the most versatile grapes available, Chardonnay can be used for everything from simple daily drinking during lunch or dinner to something finer, more special that you would drink on a special occasion. However, it is important to find one that meets your tastes rather than just buying any old Chardonnay. The best way to do this is by trying them out for yourself or asking someone who knows wines well which they prefer.

 

Semillon

For those who love something with more body, the Australian wine producers have come up with Semillon, made from grapes that are harvested in early March when their sugar levels reach 13-18° Brix. This grape produces a beautiful golden wine that still has the acidity needed to keep it refreshing and clean tasting while also giving it a nice body and warmth. 

 

Viognier

One of the latest white wines to come onto the scene is Viognier, which was once thought to be an obscure grape from Northern Rhone in France. However, it has started appearing all over the world recently and Australia is no exception. With its high amounts of calcium, magnesium and potassium it can help prevent high blood pressure while still giving people a wine that they will love drinking even on their no-carb diets.

 

Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio

For those who like the flavours of Pinot Gris but want something that is slightly less heavy, Pinot Grigio may be just what you are looking for. It is lighter than Pinot Gris with more acidity and a lighter body so it can be enjoyed by people who don’t normally drink white. Try pairing it up with some seafood or poultry next time you are thinking about having dinner at home. 

 

Torrontes

Another new kid on the block is Torrontes, which comes from Argentina where it has been used for centuries to make delicious desserts, jams and ice creams. Australia has taken this grape and made some great wine out of it that goes well with seafood due to its high acidity and tropical fruit flavours. It also has a lower alcohol level than some of the other wines on this list so it is a great way to start an evening. 

 

Chenin Blanc

This is not your usual Chenin Blanc, which can often be unpleasantly tart and acidic. Instead, this version is made from grapes that only reach 15° Brix and then they are fermented for 30-40 days with regular punch downs to ensure that the sugar does not ferment into alcohol. The results of all this hard work are clear in the finished product which you should try as soon as possible.
