9 Things You Must Do When Your Air Conditioner Refrigerant Leaks

We’ve all been there. Summer just started, you’re lounging in your pool when suddenly you hear a loud hissing noise coming from the air conditioner in the window. You rush out of the pool to find that your trusted AC has sprung a refrigerant leak. This is not only extremely annoying but also extremely dangerous because leaking refrigerant can lead to suffocation, heat exhaustion, or even death due to lack of oxygen. Luckily, if you know what to do when this happens, it doesn’t have to be so bad!

Air conditioning Sydney owner James Ghabach explains that when you find that your air conditioner is not working as well as it used to, one of the most likely causes is a refrigerant leak. Air conditioners use a special gas known as Freon to help them create cold air from the natural heat inside the room. If this gas leaks out, the unit will have a much more difficult time keeping things cool and comfortable. Fixing a Freon leak can be challenging, but if you have an important event coming up, there are some steps you need to take quickly.

The following list includes important actions you must immediately take if you notice your air conditioner leaking refrigerant.

1) DO NOT attempt to stop the leak yourself by using your bare hands or any makeshift tools like paper towels or duct tape. The best thing to do is immediately turn off the unit and contact a professional technician who can safely fix the problem.

2) LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY if your cooling unit is located in an enclosed space like a room, crawlspace, or hallway. When refrigerant leaks out from air conditioning units it displaces oxygen in the air causing suffocation, which can lead to death. Inhaling high levels of R-22 refrigerant makes people lightheaded and nauseous before they pass out completely due to a lack of oxygen. So leave the area quickly and don’t go back inside until someone has come to repair it!

3) STAY CALM so you’ll be able to think clearly and help others who may be in danger. This means not freaking out or panicking, which can cause people to lose rationality and do dangerous things that put themselves at further risk of death such as inhaling the refrigerant gas.

4) CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT if you don’t know how to fix the problem and your air conditioning unit is located outside so they can safely come and take care of it. If there is a fire caused by the leaking refrigerant then you’ll need professional firefighters with special equipment to come and put it out so everyone stays safe!

5) KEEP ALL VEHICLES AWAY from the air conditioning unit (and everything around it) because they could become dangerously contaminated or damaged when the refrigerant is released into the air. If your car, golf cart or motorcycle accidentally gets contaminated, then it can’t be used until you have your cooling system checked out and fixed by a professional!

6) DON’T CALL EMERGENCY SERVICES unless someone is experiencing symptoms of Asphyxia such as lightheadedness, nausea, drowsiness or loss of consciousness. By the time people are consciously aware they are being affected by refrigerant leakage, they suffocationmay have already inhaled too much of it so this isn’t an urgent emergency. The best thing to do in this case is to simply direct them to another room outside of the building with fresh air immediately if possible until help arrives.

7) STAY LOW on the ground because high concentrations of refrigerant can be very dangerous and poisonous as it rises into the air. If you’re outside, keeping your distance from the unit is also advised because refrigerant tends to sink and settle on the ground near the air conditioning system due to the earth’s gravity.

8) COME BACK LATER to check on things after someone has fixed your air conditioner and don’t go inside until you know that all of the doors and windows have been opened so no more refrigerant can escape. Having a reputable cooling unit technician service your system regularly will help keep this from happening again!
